Only 12 km from koh Samui and 40 km from Ko Tao, Koh Phangan has grown at a much steadier pace then Samui, and although the island is becoming more developed with some fantastic hotels and new holiday homes and villas, most of the development has been done tastefully which has helped keep Koh Phangan, Koh Samui's pretty little sister. The local Thai's still live very simple, and traditional lives, which is centred around village life and the local temples. The main source of income remains farming and fishing, although tourism is also becoming an important income source.
The island is over 70% mountainous, so if you do want to go exploring we would advise you hire a jeep. The roads are very up and down. 4 x 4 jeeps can be hired locally from about 1000 baht a day. motor bikes and mopeds can also be hired, unless you are an experienced motorbike rider we would advice against this! Most of the ringroad is now concrete, there are still a few dirt roads most off which run of the main roads, and lead you down to one of the many bays (23) on the island. Had Thong Lang lies about 1 km at the end of one of these tracks. The dirt road is in good condition, The last 50m can be tricky after a lot of rain.
Had Thong Lang is located 20 minutes north of Thongsala, the islands capital with it's thriving markets, selling fruit, vegetables and fresh fish/meat, restaurants and a good selection of shops for clothes and souvenirs. The main port is also located here.
Chaloklum is located about 10 minutes further north from Had Thong Lang. A traditional fishing village with a slow pace of life, there are some very good restaurants and bars all with a relaxed atmosphere

Access to the villas is down a 1km dirt track, common for this Island, all main ring-roads have 'just' recently been paved by the Thai Government.
As such we highly recommend jeep or bike rental when staying at Villa Sofie Dee Dee Retreat, as this is the best way to explore the Islands delights.

"Simply to say, we had a most fantastic stay at your beautiful Koh Phangan coastal villas. Once we were settled in on arrival it couldn't have been any more comfortable - soundly to sleep on firm mattresses & goose down pillows; refreshed by power shower in spacious bathroom; cooled down and funned up with time in and around the pool; and only a short walk to clamber round the rugged coastline in search of tropical fish hugging the rocks.

From the moment we arrived at Sofie and Ocean villa resort we new it would be fantastic, a very warm welcome by both Jamesy and Bew.
The villa's were a delight to see the design and facilities were absolutley top notch. we would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone (although will probably keep it a closely gaurded secret).

Als wir am 10. April in der Ocean villa in Chaloklum ankamen, waren wir sofort begeistert von dem wunderschönen und großzügigen Anwesen direkt am Meer.
Mr. James Morgan und seine Frau Bew bereiteten uns einen herzlichen Empfang und führten uns durch die geräumige Villa und über das wunderbar am Hügel gelegene Grunstück mit dem großzügigen Schwimmbad. Obwohl es bereits dunkel war, konnten wir durch die überall angebrachten Leuchten die herrliche Lage am Meer bereits erahnen.

De retour de 2 semaines (août 2009) à Dee Dee Retreat Paradise ! Accueil exemplaire de Jamesy et Bew qui viennent vous chercher à l'heure prévue au Pier. Un joli panier de bienvenue vous attend à la villa avec fruits, fromage et vin ! So frenchy ! Les deux hôtes sont plein d'attention et de prévenance.

We have recently returned from a family hoilday in Thailand which included a week at Dee Dee Retreat. We LOVED it, LOVED it, LOVED it!!!!
We are regular visitors to the Far East and have stayed in many lovely hotels, Sofie and Ocean villas are up there with the best!

Ocean villa is furbished with love and the bedrooms are comparable with a 5 star deluxe hotel incl air condition and lovely romantic ocean view. We are 100% relaxed and enjoyed our holidays at the villa. We can recommend to stay at the villa it is quiet and really relaxing. We looking forward coming back next year or the year after.

Our family (2 adults three children) spent two weeks in march at Ocean villa. The villa is wonderful spacious and well equipped. The villas are situated in a secluded little cove which guarantees privacy and enables excellent snorkeling. In short, it was to weeks of relaxed wonderful holiday in a beautiful surrounding and peaceful and laid back atmosphere.
